Assist Combos (Kuja)

Basic Combos (Kuja AST)

ddff-icon-acc-c.pngBasic Combos

Basic combos are simple combos with fewest conditions.
- Can be performed from most positions, or with Wall Rush
- Require no adjustments, or very few simple adjustments
- Intended for players new to the game, or the character

Base Damage (Breakdown): 20 > 8 > 43 (Assist) > 18 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 142 EX Force (Breakdown): 45 > ~30
Not particularly strong, but suitable for beginners. Followup (↓) can also catch aggressive opponents with mid priority if Rope Knife misses. Firion players should keep an eye out for this if they use this move.

Base Damage (Breakdown): 20 > 25 > 50 (Assist) > 22 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 213 EX Force (Breakdown): 30 > 0 > ~30
Mostly for physical damage builds. If opponent expects Double Trouble with Assist Change, the punch can fake out and steal BRV quickly.

Base Damage (Breakdown): 20 > 5 > 46 (Assist) > 18 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 133 EX Force (Breakdown): 30 > 15 > ~30
This combo is more situational, but basic in structure. If Firion cannot wall rush (e.g. near a ledge with Banish Trap), he can opt to do this combo for some meter depletion and HP damage.

Base Damage (Breakdown): 20 > 10 + HP & WR > 47 (Assist) > 18 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 142 EX Force (Breakdown): 30 > 30 > ~30
A Firion staple. If opponent can escape with Assist Change after Kuja, Straightarrow can be a safer combo ender / pressure tool.

Base Damage (Breakdown): 20 + HP & WR > 43 (Assist) > 18 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 120 EX Force (Breakdown): 30 > ~30
Lord of Arms isn't the safest move to throw out, but it can control space effectively when timed well. If only the second wave hits, there is far less time to confirm an assist combo with Wall Rush. Seeing an opponent dodge or block first can help with this, though.

Base Damage (Breakdown): 16 + HP & WR > 48 (Assist) > 20 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 126 EX Force (Breakdown): ~30 > ~30
Weaponsmaster is risky to use in neutral, but it can also start assist combos. Weaponsmaster's bravery damage varies a little in general, it will often do at least 8 hits, instead of all 11 hits.

Core Combos (Kuja AST)

ddff-icon-acc-b.pngCore Combos

Core combos balance potency with consistency.
- They work against most characters in the game
- May require adjustments due to position, assist, resources or builds
- May require combo fillers during assist
- May require different combo enders from basic combos
- Are expected to be consistently performable by most intermediate and advanced players who main the character

HP link into BRV damage fillers. Swordslash (air) is fast enough to add damage during Kuja's Snatch Blow. It typically Wall Rushes as well for extra damage. Firion relies on Double Trouble often, and in terms of bravery damage, few combos can come close.

A Firion classic. Recommended for high base bravery builds. Straightarrow filler serves a few purposes; It adds meter depletion, resets base BRV recovery to normal and increases critical hit rate for Weaponmaster during base BRV recovery. Straightarrow can be fired whenever during Kuja's multi-hits, and if it Wall Rushes, it's even better for Firion.

Lord of Arms with Swordslash (air) filler. Only 1 Swordslash is practical here due to Firion's positioning, but the damage is serviceable regardless. In the video example, Kuja misses 1 BRV hit, which is a negligible damage loss compared to Firion's Swordslash.

Lord of Arms with Straightarrow filler. Similar to the Double Trouble combo, this is recommended for high base BRV builds. Straightarrow resets base BRV recovery to normal and adds meter depletion, but it cannot floor Wall Rush if used on the ground.

Video

Base Damage (Breakdown): 10 + HP > 4,16,20 (40 total, Assist) > 18 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 102 EX Force (Breakdown): 60 > ~30
Shield Bash's long range counter controls a lot of space, and leads to assist combo on hit. Firion should be careful about his positioning, however; Normally the thunder bolt knocks opponent upward once. If the thunder bolt hits from below, it can knock opponent up multiple times. This generates lots of EX Force (and assist gauge with Side by Side accessory_special.png), but it also delays Kuja assist timing a lot. The exact timing can be difficult to measure at first, but roughly 1 second after the first bolt hit can work. If in doubt, please watch the example video linked here.

If Firion finds an opportunity to land air Swordslash, he can get assist combo from it. Similar to Garland's Bardiche, Firion has short time to react to the hit, but the BRV damage is generally good for him. Firion's Swordslash filler does not Wall Rush in the video example. The overall BRV damage can vary slightly if Swordslash filler Wall Rushes.

Base Damage (Breakdown): HP + WR > 50 (Assist) > 20 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 105 EX Force (Breakdown): 0 > ~30
Relatively basic, but important combo for Firion. Every time Straightarrow Wall Rushes, it's a chance for assist combos (when assist is available, of course). Because Side by Side accessory_special.png builds fill assist gauge, getting these combos becomes very important.

Straightarrow combo against grounded opponents. Matchup dependent, but still recommended for high base BRV builds. The Straightarrow filler serves the same role as with prior core combos; Resets base BRV recovery, adds meter depletion and increases critical hit rate for Weaponsmaster.

Specialized Combos (Kuja AST)

ddff-icon-acc-a.pngSpecialized Combos

Specialized combos are advanced routes which require more knowledge and awareness, but offer advantages over core combos.
- Can have any number or combination of requirements and conditions; Character, position, resource, or specific situation
- Offers some advantage over core combos; Damage, wall carry, meter gain, more lenient positioning, safety against LV2 Assist Change etc.
- Might not necessarily be harder than core combos, but require more specific circumstances and knowledge to execute

Base Damage (Breakdown): 20 > 46 (Assist) > 18 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 126 EX Force (Breakdown): 60 > ~30
Combo from Firion's fastest poke. Swordslash has short reach, and the hit stun has similarly short duration. That means there is not much time to react if Swordslash connects, but if Firion is confident (e.g. when whiff punishing), this becomes more practical. Input Chase when Kuja assist is about to hit the opponent. The assist call timing is surprisingly lenient, within the time constraints. This combo can be useful if Firion wants to apply meter depletion or HP damage quickly. Namely, before the opponent gets 2 assist gauges or is otherwise getting into a better situation. Of course, it can also finish matches if needed.

Extra Combos (Kuja AST)

ddff-icon-acc-etc.pngExtra Combos

Extra combos are miscellaneous routes that are possible, but are not necessarily stronger or easier than other combos.
- May have any number or combination of requirements and conditions; Character, position, resource, or specific situation
- May provide more advantage, or less advantage than other combos
- May be more difficult than other combos
- May require more specific circumstances execute

Firion's Magic Arts: Bolt pressure can be rewarded with an assist combo. The Wall Rush happens quickly, so Firion may have to anticipate the hit instead of purely reacting. Kuja assist specifically is slow here, but gets the job done if well timed. Straightarrow filler cashes out the bravery, so base BRV may not always recover fully for Weaponsmaster.

Straightarrow combo with 2 Swordslash fillers. Some of the highest BRV damage Firion can get from Straightarrow. The closer he is to opponent, the more practical 2 Swordslashes becomes. It's still relatively difficult though, as Firion must time the second Swordslash before Kuja finishes his attack. Swordslash timing may change depending on distance.

Base Damage (Breakdown): 16 + HP > 50 (Assist) > 22 + HP & WR Opponent Assist (Comrade's Vow): 132 EX Force (Breakdown): 96 > ~30
Close-range counter combo. Must be done near wall, because the wall reduces Shield Bash's knockback. Shield Bash produces a lot of EX, but this is not a common combo starter for Firion, even in small stages. Firion can also knockback cancel Shield Bash counter's last hit. This compromises his base BRV recovery for the next HP somewhat, but it does not require wall.

Weaponsmaster is risky to use, but Firion can knockback cancel it with Kuja assist. Not generally used in competitive play, but it has potential to close out a match with a hard read. No wall needed.
