Gilgamesh is a swordsman who operates in close range and midrange. He draws a random weapon with every sword attack, which come with various effects. Weapon length, damage and EX Force generation all change depending on the weapon. Even Iai Strike (Bravery Break) is possible! All this is backed up by a well rounded air repertoire: Double Trouble is the quintessential fast poke for safe plays, Electrocute controls space from afar and Whirlwind Slash closes gaps and starts various combos. Hurricane rounds out combos and catches off guard with its blindingly fast startup.
Gilgamesh’s strengths are characterized by his synergy with system mechanics and aerial attacks. He can fill assist and EX gauges at a steady rate with defensive play and Whirlwind Slash combos. While the reward varies with different weapons, Gilgamesh always benefits from EX; His damage potential skyrockets in EX mode thanks to his high base ATK, Octo Break and EX Burst, which is arguably the strongest in the game.
Historically Gilgamesh has been ranked somewhere in mid tier. This has more to do with competitive representation than anything else. He’s not omnipotent though; His ground combat is comparatively slower and riskier. Random weapon draws could cause lots of damage or 1 damage per hit, with no way to guarantee an effect in most cases. Gilgamesh has very fast close-range attacks, but far slower, telegraphed midrange attacks. Gilgamesh picks between those two, and has nothing in between without sacrifices to his consistent air bravery loadout. If Gilgamesh is cornered, he has little upset potential outside of random weapon effects, high risk reads and long-term defensive play. Overall Gilgamesh is generally well rounded in most important areas of the game, making him a competent character in competitive play.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Aerial combat - Solo combos, quick poke, gap closer, lightning fast HP attack and ranged tools, Gilgamesh performs well in the most common area of the game.
Mid range anti-zoning - Electrocute is great at checking opponents at a distance, rewarding combos on hit.
Random weapons - Extraordinary effects such as instant bravery break, weapon length and increased EX generation are applied the moment Gilgamesh draws one of his 8 swords, which can turn the tides in his favor on a moment's notice.
EX Mode - One of the strongest EX Bursts in the game, along with 8 wielded swords can exponentially increase Gilgamesh's reward on hit.
Fast faller - Whenever Gilgamesh air dodges, he is more difficult to hit out of it on average.
Ground combat - Slow running speed, average HP attacks and lackluster bravery attacks pale in comparison to Gilgamesh's fundamentally solid aerial moves.
Random weapons - Gilgamesh cannot control which sword comes out, and may have to fight with suboptimal effects when he wants it the least.
EX Revenge checkmates - With aerial Missile HP being slow on startup and the other single hit HPs being ground only, overcoming EX Revenge checkmates can be difficult.
Bravery Attacks
When Masamune is drawn, attacks generate more EX Force. This value is listed for all sword attacks, after the default EX Force value.
When Masamune or Genji Blade is drawn, base damage is x0.75. Round down to nearest integer, minimum = 1. Genji Blade depletes EX gauge on hit.
[Mid] High-speed slashes. Slow, effective vs. any height.

The weapons' base damage affects the attack's base damage, not the final damage. This is one of the few mechanics that affect an attack's base damage, which means everything scales with builds (higher ATK etc.).
Weapon disappears if Gilgamesh dodges, blocks, gets hit, or Chase ends.
Weapon stays if Gilgamesh initiates Chase or chains a missed attack into another attack (e.g. Double Trouble > Double Trouble)

Assist
Gilgamesh Assist Data
When used as an assist, Gilgamesh only draws Excalibur or Excalipoor. 50 % chance for either sword. Excalibur doubles the damage multiplier of the attacks as normal in addition to enhanced EX meter drain. Excalipoor applies 1 damage to all hits and generates EX for the opponent.
