Every booster accessory is active except BRV = 0, the booster multiplier is x3.5.

Despite Large Gap in HP having a higher booster multiplier (x3.5 multiplier, x4.9 with brv = 0), it ends up having slightly less HP damage overall, while taking longer to capitalize on the booster. The missing booster also affects meter depletion (Dismay Shock and Battle Hammer), but not to the point of being unusable.

Overview

Cloud of Darkness can use both balanced builds and Side by Side accessory_special.png builds. Although solo HP combos are not that common outside of grounded Tentacle of Pain 3 (Bolts), a good read with a block / HP attack can create some much needed momentum. Filling assist gauge quickly with whiffs is rather slow, but there aren't many ways to work around this flaw. Initial assist gauge from First to Victory (hybrid builds), and Together As One (Side by Side builds) can help early, but the player is responsible for making it work long-term.

Getting EX can prove challenging due to most attacks not generating any EX, but Glutton accessory_special.png (take EX during hit stun) and Dragonfly Orb accessory_basic.png (EX Core gain boost) are still worth considering.

Tips

Ground HPs

Cloud of Darkness has 5 ground HP attacks, which are all useful in some way. Anti-Air Particle Beam is often picked for solo HP combos after Pain 3 (Bolts), but others depend on player preference. Long-Range for passive zoning (and assist combos if it hits), Wide Angle for lenient assist combo enders, creating checkmates with assist and Mindbreak builds. Wrath is useful on the ground after dodging, but there's an argument to be made in favor of using Feint instead, even if it's not that strong; After being knocked down, many follow up attacks can be blocked, dodged, or jumped into air Wrath. If something is not blockable and has longer uptime, Feint can act as a second dodge after using ground dodge first. Feint is also useful as an assist combo filler with Jecht air BRV and Kuja ground BRV assists.

Opponents cannot know which HP attacks Cloud of Darkness has equipped ahead of time. Cloud of Darkness can benefit from this element of surprise, so aspiring players may want to practice using all ground HP attacks at some point.

Build Overview

  • The booster multiplier is x2.3 by default. x3.3 with BRV = 0 accessory_booster.png active.

This is a damage build that focuses on high HP damage with Wall Rush. If Cloud of Darkness starts an assist combo with an HP attack, it can easily do 3000+ HP damage in total. And because the damage comes from naturally high bravery, there is no need to worry about the opponent's DEF stat reducing damage that much.

This build makes use of Cloud of Darkness' (CoD) unique LV100 weapon Everdark for its bravery recovery. This creates room for other options, notably base bravery, HP Wall Rush damage and meter depletion. The booster accessories lean into this, with BRV = 0 accessory_booster.png being a standout pick; It affects both Sniper Eye and Dismay Shock whenever an HP attack Wall Rushes (e.g 0-form Particle Beam). Miracle Shoes accessory_special.png and Maximillian ddff-icon-equip-body.png make up for the max HP reduction from Chainsaw ddff-icon-equip-hand.png and Thornlet ddff-icon-equip-head.png.

This build is recommended against Side by Side accessory_special.png users who don't contest for EX, such as Firion, Onion Knight and Golbez.

Skilled opponents often defend and build resources before approaching CoD. Although it is risky, getting damage early as an attacker can prove beneficial.

For a Side by Side accessory_special.png variant, replace First to Victory accessory_special.png with Side by Side. That makes reads with HP attacks more rewarding, but disables EX gauge and EX absorption entirely.

Damage Number Notes (Blue Gem accessory_special.png vs. Large Gap in HP accessory_booster.png)

This build previously had Large Gap in HP accessory_booster.png booster instead of Blue Gem. This serves as a quick reference for how much damage Blue Gem accessory_special.png increases for HP attack Wall Rush (WR). Feint Particle Beam is used to get the damage numbers.
Blue Gem 1 hit HP WR
1523 + 581 = 2104 HP
Large Gap 1 hit HP WR (Large Gap inactive)
1463 + 558 = 2021 HP
Large Gap 1 hit HP WR (Large Gap active)
1463 + 616 = 2079 HP

Despite Large Gap in HP having a higher booster multiplier (x3.5 multiplier, x4.9 with brv = 0), it ends up having slightly less HP damage overall, while taking longer to capitalize on the booster. The missing booster also affects meter depletion (Dismay Shock and Battle Hammer), but not to the point of being unusable.

Adjustments

10 Capacity Points are available for extra abilities, such as Gambler's Spirit, Disable Counterattack and Physical Shield. Not much room for more abilities. Omni Ground Dash+ may be replaced at the player's discretion, as it costs 20 points. The extra mobility is nice to have, though.

Substitutes
Equipment / Ability Substitute Notes
First to Victory accessory_special.png OR
Miracle Shoes accessory_special.png
Tenacious Attacker accessory_special.png OR
Glutton accessory_special.png
First to Victory's initial boost and Miracle Shoes' stat boosts are nice to have, but if Cloud of Darkness wants to collect EX more easily, Glutton or Tenacious Attacker help with that.
First to Victory accessory_special.png / Miracle Shoes accessory_special.png Side by Side accessory_special.png Side by Side generates a chunk of assist gauge for CoD whenever its HP attack connects in neutral. This lets CoD capitalize on blocks and HP attacks more often with assist. This can provide a safety net for CoD against other Side by Side users, as well as characters who outpace CoD's EX gain consistently, such as Lightning and Gilgamesh.

Replacing First to Victory gets rid of initial assist gauge, but also opens up Empty EX Gauge booster accessory_booster.png for x1.5 multiplier. Replacing Miracle Shoes is a minor HP and damage loss due to lower base bravery, but keeps the initial assist gauge from First to Victory.

CoD fills assist gauge rather slowly with whiffs, so unequipping First to Victory may require more dashing or a strong read on the opponent to offset the lack of initial assist gauge.

[Fusillade] Particle Beam (Ground) Aura Ball Fusillade can force the opponent to move or dodge. If that does not work, Aura Ball provides more defensive stalling. It fills assist gauge more safely than Fusillade.
