Overview

Emperor Mateus is the antagonist of Final Fantasy II. He is a trap-based character with a unique emphasis on keepaway and building pressure by forcing approaches with Starfall, outplaying with smart trap sets.

Strengths Weaknesses
  • Powerful Trap Gameplan: Emperor specializes in Traps and Anti-Approach, able to keep out most characters effectively with his moves and force bold or creative approaches to land a hit on him
  • Unique Win Condition: Starfall gives him a unique win condition in the form of a move that is unavoidable once it started, but takes time to be charged. This gives him a tool to force approaches and the opponent has to respect it existing with counterplay in every matchup, even in those that have an easier time shutting it down
  • Strong Defensive Mixups: Low Recovery on most of his moves, Moves staying out even if he gets hit and fast Dodge Cancels make Emperor very slippery and tricky to approach
  • Thunder Crest: Thunder Crest gives Emperor a powerful tool to stop approaches with and sometimes even checkmating characters with it existing alone
  • Strong Assist Gain: A combination of low recovery moves, having to rotate between them, Starfall and Side by Side being a common build lets Emperor quickly build meter while setting up his gameplan, often staying above in the meter race
  • Polarizing Matchups: Both a Pro and Con. With all his upsides, Emperor lacks extremely in rushdown, giving him the most polarizing matchup spread in the entire game. Some characters get outright shutdowned with the right conditions and some give him absolute hell without stage counterpicks. Any character that can play around Starfall and traps requires a different approach to beat
  • Polarizing Stage Strengths: Another Pro and Con. Stage Picks change Emperors gameplan harder than other characters, requiring you to learn effective strategies for some of the more unorthodox/smaller stages

[Mid] Draw sigil on the ground. Paralyzes foe when in range.

The bread and butter of grounded combos and the bane of alot of characters existence. Emperor draws a large sigil that travels forward on the ground for a while before going into a full stop. Bounces off of walls and outright stops at edges. Using Lock Off Emperor can turn and place the crest into any direction if its on eutral circle

It has a bigger than what the sigil implies hitbox, and draws in characters and assists closeby once activate and deal damage, leaving them floating after the last hit. It also deals an immpressive 40 base damage overall, making this a staple to build his best combos around.

One of its standout properties is that stays even if he gets hit until it completely vanishes, and because its unblockable it overrides any attack and stops it imnmediately when a character touches it. It essentially shuts down any approach through it, making it incredibly oppressive for some characters and limiting their options to a bare few, giving Emperor more time to set up other traps around him.
